A consultation paper canvassing the key issues to be investigated as part of a review of Tasmania’s public vocational education and training has been released for comment. .

The Tasmanian Minister for Education and Skills, Nick McKim, said the paper would provide a starting point for discussion and extensive consultation that would occur as part of the review, where the main focus will be on the two major public VET providers – the Tasmanian Skills Institute and Tasmanian Polytechnic,

Written submissions will be invited in response to the consultation paper until 16 March 2012.

“This is one part of the consultation process that will take place as part of the review. There will be ample opportunity for all those with a stake in the outcome of this important review to provide input,” Mr McKim said.

Opportunities will be provided in each region of the State in February/March 2012 for stakeholders and community members to meet with the consultant and make submissions directly.

Details of the regional consultation will be available in the new year.

A report on the findings of the review will be provided to the Minister by April 2012.

The review will investigate the current governance, funding and operational arrangements of the public providers of VET in Tasmania, including their capacity to improve retention and participation rates, respond to identified skills needs and contribute to Tasmania’s productivity.

“It will also ensure that the increased availability and accessibility of VET options and pathways to younger Tasmanians achieved over the last four years is sustained,” Mr McKim said.
