Over one thousand voluntary redundancies will be made as the Western Australian government rolls ahead on its cost-cutting public sector contraction.

Premier Colin Barnett says he expects more than 1,000 people will accept the “generous” redundancy package on offer as the state makes deep cuts on its way to a supposed budgetary saving of around $75 million.

The removal of a large amount of public sector jobs was announced earlier this year. As a response to outcry since then the Premier has sweetened the deal, now offering the maximum payout of 72 weeks salary to anyone who accepts the deal.

It is still unclear the exact number of spots in line for the guillotine. Barnett says preliminary reports have indicated it will exceed 1,000 workers by a “significant amount.”

“That will be assessed and the question we will face is whether we will extend it beyond 1,000, or extend it longer in time,” Premier Barnett said.

“It is a very generous offer that the state has put forward.”
