The Northern Territory Government has introduced the Constitutional Convention (Election Bill) 2011 before Territory Parliament, as recommended by the bi-partisan Steering Committee and the Northern Territory Constitutional Convention Committee.

The Bill will facilitate the electing of  delegates for the Constitutional Convention, to be held in April 2012, which will push for the Territory adopting Statehood.

Chief Minister Paul Henderson said the Bill was an important step for Territorians, with the Constitutional Convention playing a pivotal role in setting the groundwork for a model and case for Statehood.

“The Constitution will provide the blueprint for why the Territory should become a state and it is important the community has an opportunity to be a part of this process.”
