The New South Wales State Government has called an expanded testing regime to assist school students prepare for tertiary studies and the workforce.

In a submission to the Gonski school funding review, the State Government suggested it could be considered a realistic possibility that all students, regardless of economic background, could go on to study at a tertiary or vocational education level.

To achieve this, the government’s submission called for the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) to set new benchmarks beyond basic literacy and numeracy tests.

The government’s submission has called for Year 12 NAPLAN testing to go beyond simple completion and should be used as a tool to assess and measure skills picked up throughout their schooling.
