The window is open for changes, as the NT Government starts its review of the Local Government Act.

The Department of Local Government and Regions has launched its review of the Territory’s Local Government Act, which defines the powers, ethical conduct, standards of governance, service delivery, asset management and financial accountability of councils.

The legislation has been operating for over six years and the Local Government Association of NT says it is now time for an overhaul.

The representative body wants to ensure the legislation is effective and up-to-date, in the hope of ensuring that the rules underpinning local government work effectively for the benefit of local people and the sector generally.

The Department of Local Government and Regions will establish a working party to assist in the review, which will include representatives from the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT), the local government sector and the department.

Members of the general public, local government sector, land councils and other industry sectors are encouraged to provide written submissions or suggestions.
